What is Emetophobia?

Emetophobia is the intense fear of illness, or being sick. Surprisingly common among people, but often overlooked as people who suffer from it are convinced it’s silly or are embarrassed about it. Having clients before who suffer, it’s things like:

  • Avoiding public places in fear of bacteria or viruses – such as cinemas, concerts or restaurants
  • Always being on the lookout for danger zones, carrying sanitiser and other health items around at all times.
  • Constantly listening for bugs on the go, or doom scrolling about people infected with Covid-19

When you’re constantly worried about being sick, or those around you becoming ill, then it’s simply exhausting and could control many aspects of your life. By overcoming your fears of becoming ill, you can enjoy company with friends at parties and social events without having to always worry about catching anything or who’s touched what. You’ll be free to pick up the kids from school and enjoy meals out again and get more in control of your life.

Emetophobia, the fear of being sick, is rarely spoken of but a very prevalent phobia with over 3 million suffering today in the UK alone. Often when I speak to clients they have tried everything to no avail and always succumb to the debilitating fear. I’ll look to find the cause of your phobia in an attempt to rid it from your life.

Those who suffer from Emetophobia rarely discuss it

It’s very common to feel silly and embarrassed about the thought of being scared about being sick. With some people actually being laughed at for the mere mention to medical professionals, only to be left even more in the dark and less likely to open up about it further. Thankfully by mentioning it to me they learned to overcome their fear and are finally able to live their life without fear of being sick or vomiting.

So if you or anyone you know is suffering from the thought of becoming sick, or it’s constantly on their mind about keeping safe, then I can help as a Hypnotherapist. There really is a solution.

  1. This is also known as Vomit Phobia, Fear of being sick, Fear of Gagging, Sickness Phobia
  2. Most sufferers are female, in fact only approximately 10% are male.
  3. Sometimes emetophobes are incorrectly diagnosed as being anorexic, however their refusal to eat has little to do with losing weight but a lot to do with their fear of being sick.
  4. Sufferers may avoid alcohol, crowds, parties or anywhere where they think they may be sick or encounter someone else vomiting.
  5. Often they worry about hygiene, paying great attention to cleanliness and perhaps avoiding work when a colleague has been ill.
  6. Sufferers may avoid becoming pregnant due to the worry of morning sickness
  7. People with emetophobia spend a lot of time worrying about their phobia. Much of their time is spent attempting to control their lives so as to minimise or avoid the risk of being sick or seeing others being sick. Sometimes this will involve not leaving their home as they cannot control what might happen if they do.

Little has been researched about this phobia, and studies undertaken have had very few participants. Generally Emetophobia is considered very difficult to treat

Exposure treatments are counter intuitive, since the sight of vomit is an emetophobe’s worst nightmare, so you can imagine the panic that would follow. Although some people can be helped through Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) this isn’t always proven to be effective as it doesn’t decrease symptoms of the phobia.

How Hypnosis can treat Emetophobia

During our 1 to 1 sessions, we will address the primary beliefs which are limiting you. We’ll work on your self esteem as well, potential social anxiety and removing subconscious blockages. With your newfound knowledge you will be empowered to use the skills I intend to teach you on how to overcome your phobia.
